Shaking Hands
It is customary to shake hands before a game starts, wishing the opponents well, and again at the end of the game.
The values written into the Laws of the Sport of Bowls and are manifested in good etiquette which means playing well, competing hard when it is needed, and being in good stead with your opponent before, throughout, and after the match.
Learning to lose well is as important as learning to win.
Changing Ends - Be aware of your surroundings
You are only entitled to be on your rink. The rink markers on either side of the rink should always be visible to your own team as well those on the adjacent rinks.
When you are talking at the change of ends, you should do so close to the head. In that way you do not interfere with the line being bowled by those on adjacent rinks.
You should also walk as close to the centre of the rink as possible, NOT down the sides where you may interfere with those bowling on adjacent rinks, and do not walk through the head, always walk around it.
Scoring an End - Agreeing shots
It is only the two players designated to agree the score (the number 2 in triples and the number 1 in fours) who should be involved in agreeing the score and / or measuring where necessary.
The player whose team is not holding shot should concede the shot (s) and measure where necessary. The others player should wait for the outcome of their opposite's deliberations and not 'ask for shots'.
No player should move any bowls 'in the count' until the scoring has been agreed.
Roles of Players
Each player has certain duties to perform during the game (based on a typical Fours game):
Lead
• Lay the mat
• Delivers the Jack
• Delivers mainly draw shots to lay good foundation for the development of the head.
• If the end is lost, is responsible for gathering up all the bowls and moving them behind the mat.
Second
• Records the progress of the game on the rink scoreboard and on the score card (if that has been delegated by the Skip).
Third
• Acts as the measurer to determine the number of shots scored in each end.
• Directs the skip in choice of shot to play.
